Williams played 144 times for the club over six seasons and scored three goals from centre-back. The Englishman later left the club to join Cardiff City and eventually retired from football at Gateshead in 2010.

The Black Cats’ defence has been responsible for conceding 14 goals in the 11 fixtures so far in League One, which has put the club in ninth on just 19 points.
