Scorecard
While England were romping to victory at The Oval, Nasser Hussain took the chance to register his first Championship century in four years, making 192 not out as Essex built a useful first-innings lead at Chelmsford. Hussain came into the match with a paltry 82 first-class runs to his name this summer from six innings, but he exploited Kent’s lack of firepower – Mohammad Sami excepted – adding 174 in 42 overs with Aftab Habib (77) for the fourth wicket. Habib’s effort contained 11 fours but he was left cursing his judgment as he was bowled without offering a stroke by Alamgir Sheriyar with the second over of the new ball.Leicestershire 159 for 2 v Nottinghamshire 326 at Leicester
Scorecard
The day belonged to Virender Sehwag who blasted 121 in a little over two hours between tea and the close as Leicestershire looked to make up for time lost on the first day. Sehwag’s hundred, which came in 111 minutes off 104 balls, overshadowed Paul Franks’s maiden Championship century for Nottinghamshire earlier in the day. Franks (123) and Kevin Pietersen (88) put on 149 for the sixth wicket, Piertersen hitting four fours in an over off Charles Dagnall, after Nottinghamshire had been wobbling on 123 for 5 on an easy-paced pitch.Middlesex 370 v Surrey 274 for 3 at Lord’s
Scorecard
Ian Ward’s third championship century of the summer put Surrey in a commanding position in the London derby at a sultry Lord’s. Mark Butcher (44) and Ward (104) added 89 for the first wicket, and then Mark Ramprakash plodded to 68 not out. Graham Thorpe looked set for a big score before Abdul Razzaq had him caught behind shortly before the close. Middlesex’s first innings subsided with little fuss in the morning, Jimmy Ormond taking the remaining three wickets to fall.Sussex 545 v Warwickshire 194 for 8 at Hove
Scorecard
Matt Prior’s hundred extended Warwickshire’s suffering on a perfect batting track at Hove as Sussex amassed 545, with only Waqar Younis, who finished with 5 for 99, posing any danger. But when Warwickshire batted the pitch suddenly seemed to be full of demons, as they lost seven wickets for 67 after Michael Powell (60) had given them a good start. Mushtaq Ahmed stretched his championship tally to 44 wickets by taking 3 for 52.

Scorecard
Worcestershire fought back against Glamorgan after Mike Kasprowicz dismissed their top three to leave them struggling on 59 for 3. Gareth Batty (49), Simon Adshead (58 not out) and Matt Mason (52) weighed in at Nos. 7, 8 and 9, Mason’s runs coming off 42 balls.Hampshire 330 v Gloucestershire 185 & 50 for 2 at Southampton
Scorecard
Hampshire ended the day in a strong position thanks to Derek Kenway’s first Championship hundred in two seasons. Kenway struck 115 in an innings which included three sixes, all of them off Martyn Ball. Kenway and Simon Katich put on 133 for the second wicket, and then Kenway and Robin Smith added 85 for the third. Gloucestershire took some late solace from the fact Hampshire lost their last six wickets for 31, and the last four without the addition of a run. When they batted again, however, Gloucestershire lost Craig Spearman and nightwatchman Mike Smith and are still 95 in arrears.
Northamptonshire 203 & 243 v Derbyshire 160 & 0 for 0 at Northampton
Scorecard
The Northamptonshire groundsman was the latest target of Dominic Cork’s anger – Cork telephoned Lord’s at lunch on the first day to complain about the pitch used for this match – and after 17 wickets fell on the second day Cork’s blood pressure would have remained high. Although Derbyshire’s Nathan Dumelow completed a 10-wicket match haul with 5 for 78 in the second innings, Northants ended the day in a strong position after being dismissed for 243 and setting Derbyshiore 286 to win. On the evidence of their first innings Derbyshire have little hope, only 52 from Dumelow rescuing them from 97 for 7 as Andre Nel and Jason Brown shared eight wickets. But even if Northants do go on to win, it could be that the ECB pitch inspectors who were hovering in the background all day have the final say.
Somerset 275 v Yorkshire 409 for 6 at Taunton
Scorecard
Matthew Wood’s career-best 207 not out put Yorkshire into a strong position at Taunton, and he was well supported by Stephen Fleming who fell two runs short of making a century on his Championship debut for the county. Fleming’s dismissal heralded a Somerset fightback, but Wood found support from Andy Gray, who hit 44 not out in an unbeaten seventh-wicket stand of 112. Wood gave just one chance, when he had made 148, but Mike Burns spilt a routine chance at second slip off Nixon McLean.Varsity MatchOxford University 552 for 7 dec beat Cambridge University 181 & 270 by an innings and 71 runs at Fenners
Scorecard
Michael Munday took 5 for 83 with his legbreaks to spin Oxford to a comfortable innings victory at Cambridge. Simon Marshall batted almost five hours in making an unbeaten 126 and for a time it appeared that he might have done enough to get Cambridge off the hook as the tail held fast, but Munday’s perseverance won through.
