According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur could move for £35m-rated Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure in January amidst doubts over Victor Wanyama’s future with the club, but their arch-rivals Arsenal should be watching developments closely.
What’s the word?
The French midfielder has been a consistently strong performer for the Hornets since his arrival from Rennes in 2016. The powerful midfielder possesses great vision, energy levels and positional sense, allowing him to contribute effectively at both ends of the pitch.
The 25-year-old has shown in his time at Vicarage Road that he is capable of meeting the demands of the Premier League and he is now ready for the next step up in his career.
Doucoure would undoubtedly be a smart target for Spurs to pursue, but their bitter rivals Arsenal would also be wise to enter the fray for the former France U21 international’s signature.
A winter boost
Whilst the summer arrivals of Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi have seen a significant injection of defensive diligence and solidity into the Gunners’ midfield, the north London club still lack depth in that area of the pitch.
On top of that, they also lack physicality in the middle of the park. Doucoure’s arrival would give Unai Emery’s squad a boost of extra strength and power, however the midfielder also possesses the technical ability required to thrive at the Emirates Stadium.
With a Transfermarkt valuation of just £13.5 million, Doucoure represents an affordable January option for the Gunners to bolster their squad ahead of what will inevitably be a gruelling second half of the campaign.
What do you think, Arsenal fans – would Doucoure be a smart buy in January?
