According to O Jogo (via HITC), Newcastle are closing in on Benfica defender Lisandro Lopez, who stands to be the clubs first signing of the summer.
What’s the Story?
According to reports in Portugal, Benfica are rady to sell defender Lisandro Lopez to Newcastle in a deal that would also see Greek international Andreas Samaris move to St. James’ Park. Lopez, who is valued at £4.25million by transfermarkt has impressed for Benfica this season, who claimed their third Portuguese domestic crown in as many years.
With Rafa Benitez becoming frustrated with the lack of signings at Newcastle so far this summer, a double deal for the two stars of Liga Nos would surely settle both the Spanish manager and the fans.
How good was Lopez last season?
Despite playing just 14 times in all competitions for Benfica, Lopez impressed immensely, especially in the league, where he netted three times in just six starts. The 27-year-old has struggled to find a place in the first team at the Portuguese Champions but has always been the first defender called up for cover.
The Argentine demonstrates fantastic concentration at the back and is known for his non-nonsense tackling. He is also, as his goal-scoring record shows, a serious threat from indirect free kicks, with a magnificent leap and incomparable heading ability.
Would Lopez be a good fit for Newcastle?
It is abundantly clear that the squad at Newcastle needs significant strengthening. While the club performed miraculously well to regain their Premier League status after just one year out of the top flight, most of the current crop of players are inexperienced at England’s highest level.
Lopez may well represent a gamble in the fact that he has never played in England. However, he is bright, enthusiastic and a unique talent that is sure to flourish under Rafael Benitez.
