As reported by The Daily Mail, Manchester United are tracking the progress of RB Leipzig winger Emil Forsberg.
What’s the story?
United have had a fairly strong start to the season but still have some creativity problems to solve in Jose Mourinho’s pragmatic midfield.
One potential solution is bringing in a natural left-sided winger to solve that problem and it seems Mourinho is directly addressing that during the international break.
The Daily Mail report he was in attendance during Sweden’s recent World Cup playoff victory over Italy, specifically to check on the progress of Emil Forsberg, who put in a man of the match performance.
Rated at £19.8m by Transfermarkt, the winger is an integral part of the Leipzig set-up and could provide the perfect mid-season attacking boost to Mourinho’s first team.
Creative king
Forsberg was a real driving force for RB Leipzig last season, helping them to a second place finish in the Bundesliga ahead of Borussia Dortmund.
In 30 top-flight appearances he scored a decent eight goals, but it was his 22 assists that really caught the eye, a phenomenal return in a single season and beyond anyone in a similar role managed at Man United last term.
That kind of raw creativity could be massive for the Red Devils, with the likes of Romelu Lukaku ready to finish off any chances that come his way. The Belgian has looked a bit isolated in recent weeks and adding someone on the left flank to provide for him could be the missing piece Mourinho needs to find this season.
Forsberg is untested at a truly big club but his form of last season means he deserves his chance and United are badly in need for a player like him. It’s a move that makes a lot of sense.
