Leeds may continue to play some of the best football in the Championship under Marcelo Bielsa but the match against Cardiff showed there is a still a weakness in their mentality.
The Whites threw away the chance of promotion last term and collapsed in remarkable fashion on Saturday, allowing Neil Harris’ side to claw back a 3-0 deficit in the most unlikely of ways.
Mateusz Klich tweeted after the match that the squad has learned their lesson and he is determined to put things right, with fans suggesting that he and the squad better do so if Leeds are to go up this time around.
Virtually impossible: Can you name the year all of these Leeds flops arrived at Elland Road?
Bielsa’s side still has a ten-point cushion over third-place but that isn’t enough to reassure supporters, many of whom care desperately about going up, and see this calamity as a sign that achieving promotion could be beyond the squad once again.
Others have been a little less forthright in their approach but the general message remains the same, for the players to understand what went wrong and avoid repeating similar mistakes in future.
It is very surprising that they slipped up in the manner they did, however, since they had conceded just ten league goals in 21 games prior to the visit of the Bluebirds, and had, on occasion, ground out wins in their seven-match winning run – such as Huddersfield and Reading.
Due to the unexpected nature of the comeback, some fans are a little more understanding, but should it happen again the backlash will perhaps be a little more vociferous, regardless of how well the team may have played for the majority of the proceedings.
Even those with more patience are keen to reiterate what the manager and squad must do from now on, and that really just epitomises how essential promotion is this campaign, and what it would mean for the fanbase.
Other Leeds fans are rather unhappy with Eddie Nketiah for his role in Cardiff’s comeback, with some beginning to doubt whether he should remain at the club until the end of the season.
