According to reports in the Mirror, Sheffield United want to sign Jay Rodriguez from West Brom.
The Blades have been linked with a plethora of strikers this window, but far too many of them haven’t been of proven Premier League standard.
Makes sense
A reported transfer may have never made so much sense.
Rodriguez ticks almost every box for Chris Wilder and his transfer policy up to this point.
Wilder has always built his teams around domestic players, and the former Southampton striker fits into that bracket.
Perhaps most importantly the Yorkshire club have been looking for bargains, and the 29-year-old has a £5m release clause after the Baggies failed to be promoted.
Finally looking in the right places
Sheffield United’s transfer radar has been all over the place this summer, but this report indicates that they’re finally looking in the right places.
They have been linked to the likes of Macauley Bonne, Lee Gregory (Daily Mail May 16, Page 56), Britt Assombalonga, Neal Maupay and Ollie McBurnie – promising players but all yet to prove they can do the business in the top flight.
Rodriguez is a different story altogether though. He has established his credentials in the Premier League by scoring 15 goals in a season at Southampton, and if he can recapture that type of form, he will be a fantastic acquisition for the newly promoted side.

Wilder must continue to work towards more transfers in this fashion rather than looking at players who have no experience, and at just £5m the Englishman is an absolute steal.
